Nano-cellulose Material: From Fundamental to Applications
Nanotechnology holds enormous promise to revolutionize materials use in the 21st century and represents a major opportunity to generate new products among multiple industry sectors world-wide. Cellulose is the most common organic polymer, representing about 1.5 trillion tons of the total annual biomass production, and is considered as an almost inexhaustible source of raw material for the increasing demand for environmentally friendly and biocompatible products . Cellulose can be extracted from wood, plants, tunicate, bacteria and algae. Nanocellulosic materials can be divided into three broad categories, depending upon whether the cellulose nanofibers origin. Due to its excellent features like biocompatibility, high purity, mechanical durability, porosity, liquid-holding capacity and susceptibility to modifications, it may be applied in human and veterinary medicine, odontology, pharmaceutical industry, production of acoustic and filter membranes, biotechnological devices and in the food and papermaking industries. Commercial interest in nanocellulose is growing at a phenomenal rate following predictions of a possible 35 million tonnes per year market by the 2020s.
The primary goal of the workshop is to identify the critical information gaps and technical barriers in the cellulose nanomaterials with national and international experts. Speakers will include Prof. Dr Haruo Nishida from Kyushu Institute of Technology who will share his recent findings on simultaneous nanofiber and nanocomposite production methods.
